These websites are seriously acting up.
If you missed the news, Upwork’s changed its pricing and people are not happy.
It’s basically charging almost double what it was for small projects (I’m talking like 20% for projects under $500 which…no.) That fee hits us freelancers pretty hard, but they’re also making life difficult for clients — Just this week I got contacted by a client
I’ve had for almost 2 years saying he wanted off the platform because we could both benefit from just handling the relationship ourselves.
All this though, is the reality of freelancing. Things change, clients leave, sites you used to rely on get turned upside down.
I used to look to Upwork as an easy source of (
carefully chosen) clients. Now though, I’m reminded that I need to branch out and stay branched out. I spent my
marketing day this week updating profiles on a bunch of different sites. I also dusted off some templates (
like the ones you have access to as a member) started cold contacting again because, straight up, I’d just gotten lazy about it. I’m doing the same next week and I hope you’ll join me.
What about you though? What have you slowed down on, or completely let fall by the wayside in your freelance life lately? (No judgement…it happens to all of
us.)
Megan.
P.S. Bidding sites aren’t all bad for sure, so it’s always a good idea to know how to respond to any ad for a freelance job when it pops up.
Here’s a post to get you started on
that.
