OK…So I’ll be the last one to promise you that 2017 will be so great that you’ll forget about the horrors of this past year. The truth is, in a lot of ways, it could be worse, but in a lot, it could be better.

What I will say, is that you can focus on your freelance career in a way that can carve out a space of focus and hope. One of the best ways to do this is to pick a theme.

Themes have worked well for me as a freelancer and entrepreneur. Last year, my year was all about getting my income consistently back to where it was when I was employed (I was BROKE that first year of freelancing), and I made it.

If you saw me talking on Twitter, you know that this year for me is “The Year of Doubled Rates”. This is the year I’m pushing toward my big freelance goal of twice the pay for half the work.

To keep myself focused, I set a reminder on my phone to go off every two weeks and let me know what my freelance work is all about in 2017. This means that everything I do (personally) in our Monthly Challenges will be based on that theme.
