BlackFreelancer Website Tour! (Your Website)

Published: Sun, 04/30/17

Hi

It seems like websites are on everybody’s mind lately…I’ve had conversations with experienced bloggers and newbie freelancers this week re: websites, and I’ve really learned a lot.

The one big takeaway though, is that I think a lot of us are missing perspective…specifically the perspective of the people who pay us.

There is an enormous, even career-breaking difference between having a website that casually mentions that you freelance, and one that is dedicated to talking to your potential freelance customers. I think some of us have a problem moving on this because we don’t know who those customers are yet. I want you to know that that’s really not a big deal. You’ll figure it out as you go.

All you need is a simple site with who you are, what you do, your contact information, and samples (if you have them) to get started. The rest will evolve just like you will as a freelancer.

That’s why, for this week’s tour, I’m going to share an exercise with you that I do every now and again when I want to make changes to my site.

I want you to pretend to be someone looking for whatever service you offer. You have a business and you need a project completed within the next month. Your budget is $1000.

Now go to your freelance website (or your profile) and tell me if you, as a potential client, feel like that site/profile is taking your problems into consideration. Is it talking to you? Does it give you any useful information?

If the answer’s no? It’s time to start rethinking your website. If that’s something that makes you uncomfortable? (like from a tech perspective) Let me know! I can start working on some materials to help you get there.
Talk to you soon, and don’t forget to get ready for Getting Clients month next month, because we’re really going to start a new focus on getting your money up!
