We’re starting something new! And that’s because, even if you’re
only writing emails and blog posts for your freelance business, you are a business writer.
I’m hearing from a LOT of people that they need some help with business writing, so over the next year, I’m going to start building out materials to help you not only with your own writing for your freelance business, but also the writing that you can sell as a service as a freelancer.
To get started (and help me learn what you need most), you’ll
be receiving weekly advice on how to improve your current writing. That includes tips, resource recommendations, interesting posts, and anything else useful that I run across. This is also the place to ask any questions you might have about business communications in general.
This is my THING (i.e. it’s the service I sell as a freelancer, I have a graduate certificate in business writing, one in business communications (Spanish), and I just started as
a regular contributor to an online platform that helps people create better business stories), so I’m
really excited to help you, hear from you, and see how we can help build your business skills together.
With that…Leggo!
This week’s advice:
Strong headlines are EVERYTHING.
If there’s any skill you want to master right off the bat as a business writer, it’s writing powerful headlines that get people interested.
You’ve probably read that 80% of people only read the headlines on articles, and part of the reason behind that is that the articles themselves don’t entice them to want to read more.
Learning how to write headlines that get people to move is easier than you think…the best way to start? Pay attention to what gets you to click on a link or email and why. What do you ignore? What looks boring? Exciting? What words and emotions draw you in?
Practice understanding that, and you’ll be well on your way to getting people reading more of your blog posts, opening more of your emails, and overall, being a more effective business
writer.
