September Reflection: Your Freelance Clients

Published: Sun, 09/10/17

Hi

Your clients are EVERYTHING.

Who you choose to serve as a freelancer determines your income, your schedule, your services, even the hours you work. That’s why it’s so helpful to sit down a couple times a year and take some time to really think about who you work for.

This is one of my favorite sections to fill out. Not just because it’s like a mini vent session around the clients that are irritating me (it really does help), but mostly because I can look back over the months and years and see clients moving from favorites to pains and all the way back around.

It’s really helpful to see my taste and preferences changing even in a really short time, and I learn a lot about myself as a freelancer in the process.

General Freelancing

This week, we’re going to profile some of your clients.

Be REALLY honest here (you’re the only one looking at it after all), so if you get sick to your stomach every time you get an email from that one client? Say that! It’ll tell you so much about who you should be saying yes and no to in the future.

Here are this week’s questions…

  • Who’s your favorite client? Why?
  • Who’s your least favorite? Why?
  • Who’s your most profitable client?
  • Who’s your least profitable? Why are they still a client?

Be EXTRA honest about that last question. It’s one that still gets me tripped up, because there are precious few reasons (besides needing the money and maybe personal favors…even that’s questionable) that your lowest paying client should stay on your roster. (They’re probably taking up time you could be marketing to find someone who pays a lot better.)

On that last question, let me know your answers! If you’ve got a client hanging on that’s really not paying as well as your others, shoot over the reason why. I’d love to hear what you’ve got to say.
