OK , so you might know that if I've got any freelance area of
weakness, it's taxes. Doing better with my quarterlies is my top priority for 2018. That said, I tossed out some information last month that might have given you the wrong impression of how this stuff works.
If you've been paying self-employed tax, you know that it can be more than double what you pay out as an employed person, so when I said last month that I'm planning on setting aside 15% of my income each month, I was WAY off any amount that would keep
me current with the government.
After getting my return done this year (yes, I slid in the approval right on the 15th) I'm doubling that number to 30% WITH the understanding that I could still be underpaying.
Painful? Yes. But it's also why we should all be pushing our rates because of the flexibility we offer our clients and the fact that we're covering some of the bills employers normally do too. (You literally shouldn't be dropping
below $75/hr)
That said, if you'd like to get more info on taxes (even if you're not in the U.S.), let me know. I'm not one to give advice, but if enough people want an resource area, I can set that up for Academy members. Have a great week!
