This is something that took me a while to get comfortable with, but once I really started forcing myself to
define my value, it started to click.
Repeat business is where freelancers find stability…those long-term relationships that can last longer than an employed job can be what takes you
from average to great earning.
The hard part is
getting there, but you can shape that by shifting who your clients expect you to be.
Setting Service Expectations
To my highest-paying clients,
I’m a source of ideas, suggestions, and information about the newest content marketing trends and tools. I’m a partner in helping them invest their content marketing dollars the best way possible.
Sometimes I send them suggestions that have nothing to do with me (like getting a better graphic designer), sometimes I give them an option (like setting up a LinkedIn page they can manage or that I can), and sometimes it’s flat out selling my services (like suggesting whitepaper creation for an upcoming conference.)
My clients expect me to be a helpful resource when it comes to solving their problems.
That might sound far off in your freelance future, but it’s easier than it sounds. If you ever see something their
competitors are doing or that’s just popping off in your niche, let them know! A quick “Hey, I ran across X and thought you might find it interesting” can completely change your image in your clients’ eyes.
