The motivation to upgrade your skills can pop up for different reasons. Sometimes your skills are outdated and you need to catch up. Other times, an opportunity to pull ahead in the your market presents itself and you
want to get in front of it.
It can be tricky to feel these out, but paying attention to one source in particular can be a really helpful
indicator.
Your Clients Keep Asking For More
Flat out, your clients are a great barometer of what’s in need.
Sure, they can make ridiculous requests or look for work that’s not something you’re interested in, but their needs are real feedback from the real market.
Me? I love having a client who’s trying to keep up with their competition. They’re busy snooping around (hopefully legally), getting gossip at conferences, and scheming non stop (again, hopefully legally). I have one in particular who’s always hitting me up with questions…
Do you do webinar scripts?
Do you ghostwrite?
Have you ever done app content?
What about video?
That’s a great source of information for skills I might want to consider investing in (after some research around whether it’s something I should be providing).
So next time your client makes a request or even mentions work they’re farming out to another freelancer, pay attention. You might have your next high-paying service sitting right in
front of you.
