You probably know that I recommend some kind of bidding site or platform for every new freelancer.
Sure, some are full of scams
and low-paid work or take forever to get placed on a team, but they’re also where the low-hanging fruit lives — they’re where the people who are ready to hire somebody right now (vs. 4 months from now) hang out. Personally, I still use them for this exact reason.
But I get it.
You might not want to spend another
minute on Fiverr or waste another week on Upwork. I totally understand if…
You Hate (or Don’t Want to Start) Bidding
Sites
Here’s the thing though…if you make the choice to skip these ready-made communities, your marketing game has to be on point.
You have to have a strong habit of reaching out (because
your reputation and word of mouth aren’t enough…neither is the quality of your work), following up, and having a marketing funnel set up that builds trust and drives work your way.
The foundation of all that? A website that does some seriously heavy lifting and drives leads to you (since you don’t want to go to them.)
I’m all for websites that do work, but keep in mind, this is a long-term strategy in getting freelance work. If this is the route you’re going to take, make sure you start early (and don’t have any serious bills depending on that freelance
paycheck.)
