Welcome to Website Month!
This month we’re backing things WAY up and not talking about any specifics.
I’m learning that a LOT of us are out here trying to run freelance businesses without a website, so we’re going to talk about some signs that it’s time to step your game up and take a really important step toward growth.
First off, you know that I think the VAST majority of people should have a website from day ONE. Even if it doesn’t look the way you want, doesn’t work right and you hate it, that first site is the most important.
You aren’t just going to trip and stumble on your perfect site…you have to go through the trial and error process and that takes TIME.
Also, I can almost guarantee that without a website, you’re losing business.
I just put out a tweet that I was looking for someone who can design business materials and the first two people who approached me didn’t have sites. That’s pretty much already got me starting at “no”. (Serious side note: if you know any designers who do case studies and white papers, let me know.)
That’s not because they’re bad or untalented or even a bad fit. It’s just because I need someone who’s serious about their business (because I am and my clients are too), and no site is pretty much a guarantee you aren’t (even if you actually are).
So keeping that rhythm, let’s hit this week’s sign…
You’re sending samples via email
If people are asking you about your work
and you’re sending samples via email, you need a site yesterday.
Think I’m kidding? OK.
When was the last time you did more than $100 worth of a business with a place that didn’t have a website?
Seriously. Hit the reply button and let me know, because I think for most people, this is going to be VERY rare outside of lawn work and anything that could have the cops at your door.
There’s a reason for that.
These days, websites are so easy to set up, not having one has people asking questions…”Who are they?”, “Can I trust them to get the work done?”, “Will they be around next week?”
Websites answer most of those questions just by existing, and without one, you’re leaving people guessing.
So if you’re regularly having to send people emails with samples of your work…it’s time to step up your freelance game.
