I wanted to save this one for last because this is the one I’m REALLY bad at…but we need to talk about it.
I’m betting you might have the same issue, especially if you’re the kind of person who’s even considering freelancing in the first place.
Learn to Give Yourself Room
In the fight against deadline drama, the best defense really is a good offense.
When you’re discussing and setting deadlines, make sure you give yourself room to
- Complete the work at a pace that’s comfortable and healthy for you
- Review your work for accuracy, quality, and how well it adheres to client expectations
- Navigate any emergencies that might come up (because they really do)
Tbh, I always pad my deadline with a couple days on top of all that. If a client kicks back, I let them know that I don’t want to be rushed and deliver them a product that neither of us will be happy with. The worst thing that will likely happen is that you’ll be done early.
So next time you’re setting or negotiating a deadline, make sure to give yourself lots of space so you can do the best work possible and get results your clients will love.
