This one might make you feel a little uncomfortable, but it’s really important.
Not all clients are created equal, and sometimes you have to make choices. If you’re in this freelance game to earn more and live more comfortably, then this rule for dealing with deadlines is a must.
High-Paying Clients Come First
You know that rule? Good/Fast/Cheap, pick two?
You should be enforcing that.
When you’re setting up deadlines, it’s generally a good idea to push your higher-paying (throw prompt paying in there too) clients to the front of the line. Not only does that mean you’re improving your relationship with the clients with the most potential to help you reach your earnings goals, you’re also front-loading your income. That means it’s more likely you’ll earn more, and you’ll earn it faster.
This doesn’t mean you ignore your clients who don’t pay as well. You’re still serving them, they just don’t get first choice when it comes to your time.
Also, if we’re talking about a higher-paying client who you hate working with, you might need to rethink keeping them on at all, but if they’re ok to good? Give them first priority.
You’ll stress a lot less (and will do better work for everybody) knowing big chunks of your income aren’t at risk of being delayed.
