I had this topic laid out at the beginning of the month, but boy is it timely.
If you pay attention to digital media, you know that Buzzfeed just cut 1000 people…in its FIRST round of layoffs.
As shocking as that was for a lot of Black media creators, it’s honestly the norm for that niche.
Digital media and journalism have been notoriously unstable for a minute now and there’s no promise that anything’s going to turn around.
Where’s my niche headed?
One of the main reasons I push niches is safety.
Freelancers have to deal with ups and downs in markets just like everybody else. If you aren’t paying attention, you can end up caught off guard just like a lot of people were this week.
This is the beauty of freelancing though.
You have an opportunity to get ahead of the curve and align your skills with whatever it is your niche or industry trends are moving through. (That’s one reason I stay in LinkedIn groups and make small talk with clients…they always have clues.)
Be ready to shift your skills and move from wave to wave, and you’ll be one step closer to building a freelance career that minimizes traumatic events and unnecessary career (and financial) drama.
If you’re wondering about specifics, come talk it out in the Skype group. Our knowledge is even more powerful together.
