I just got told by a client that my writing is too salesy. It stung a little, but when I thought about it, I was a little proud.
I started this content marketing thing specifically because I couldn’t sell. If I wanted to make my business work, I needed to find another way to get clients.
That led me to following people like AWAI (and enduring their very sales-heavy emails) to push my sales writing abilities. What happened?
Yes, today I can write with a heavier sales hand, but I still can tone it down too. I have a much broader range of abilities as a writer. For this client I just need to adjust my tone back to my natural voice some.
That’s how content marketing works.
For some situations, it will need to be direct, and for others, a slow burn. Learning to tell the difference and how and when to use the different techniques is a skill worth practicing.
