It can take a minute to get your freelance career up and running, but honestly, there’s no reason to be hiding online in the meantime.
Trust, I get it. You don’t know the “right” first step or what people will think. What if somebody sees your profile and thinks it’s terrible??
You know what though…so what if they do? You have a business to get moving, and every day you spend in the shadows is a day of missed opportunities like these…
Education
This whole freelance thing is a game of trial and error. If you aren’t out there making mistakes, you’re depriving yourself of the vital information that moves you closer to your ideal freelance business.
Confidence
It took me years to start feeling confident as a freelancer but that was years spent putting my work out there. Confidence is what fuels you charging more and treating your career development seriously. All the time you spend hiding? That confidence is slowly eroding.
Time
You might have seen me mention this on twitter, but freelancing is evolving. I think there’s always going to be room for new entrants, but we’re in a phase where rules are being set and first-movers (and fast followers) are being rewarded. Anyone hiding now will likely end up playing catchup to those people down the road.
Here’s the biggest one though. If your goal is more freedom from an employer, you have to take the first step. Next week, we’re going to talk a little about what that looks like and how you can stop hiding online.
