Content marketing is pushing a half trillion dollar industry size AND it’s the way I’ve beat out my old employed income (even after taxes), so I’m the last person to question its status as “hot career opportunity”.
That’s what this INC article is claiming, and they’re right. What they leave out though, is how you get in on it.
If you’re leveraging it for your business, it’s a matter of having conversations that center on the value your target market needs. If you want to get going as a content producer though? It can be a little trickier.
Most of the brands they mention are working through agencies and content marketing SaaS platforms like Skyword and Contently. (I’ve seen a couple of the programs first hand.) Getting attention there is a matter of already creating content that their readers want, so if that’s where you want to head, read their publications, contact their marketing managers, pitch to trade mags in their industries, and blog about
the topics that interest them.
That’s how I ended up doing content marketing work for brands like Samsung, HP, and Iron Mountain, and that’s the path a lot of other freelance content marketers too.
