The short answer is yes. Yes your hourly rate could be better.
Last week I asked you to figure out to do a little math and figure out your hourly rate on something small. This week, I want to talk about possibilities.
The general rule of thumb is that $75/hr (or the local/regional equivalent) is a good place to start.
Your standards might be higher. My ideal is $250 right now. Do I hit it all the time? Nope. But it’s what I aim for. It’s the number I keep in mind when sending proposals and deciding whether or not to keep a client (more on that next week) and how to price a service.
Your number might be $50. It’s might be $500…the point isn’t to be on the same number as me or anybody else. It’s just to get a number and keep it…which is why I want to ask you to do something. I want you to write your number down and post it on your wall. Just like this.
I want you to have a constant visual reminder in front of you for every email, call, and while you’re working — that’s so you never forget what you’re aiming for.
Know that whatever you’ve made as an employee, your employer probably charges its customers twice that for what you produce. So be bold!
Once you get that up, make sure to come share it!
